Techies Off The Clock: Saturday Edition
All week long, I have been thinking about learning, AI, burnout, routines, and why engineers treat rest like a forbidden resource.
So for once, let us talk about the opposite of productivity.
Let us talk about Saturdays.
There is something nice about being a tech person who is not doing tech. No sprint cycles. No incident alerts. No endless tabs full of documentation. Just a quiet moment where life shrinks back down to something human sized.
For me, Saturdays are simple. I try to touch grass. I pick up a book that has absolutely no educational value. I pretend my laptop does not exist. Sometimes I even succeed.
And every time, I am reminded of something small but important.
Rest is not the opposite of work. Rest is what gives the work meaning.
So here is my gentle suggestion for anyone who spent the week overthinking, overworking, or just trying to keep up:
Find one thing today that has nothing to do with being an engineer.
One thing that is just for you.
Bonus points if it is something you promised yourself all week but kept putting off.
Double bonus points if you still open VS Code out of habit.
It happens. I get it.
Happy Saturday.
